Our programme welcomes guests from throughout the country into a safe and caring environment led by highly qualified professionals and volunteers whose drinking problem has been solved. Guests are introduced to a community of people with similar drinking experiences with whom they can relate. Through awareness and education the guest sees the need for change and The Retreat shows them precisely the steps to take. Firmly grounded in the 12 Steps, our programme fosters honesty, integrity, accountability and change.
Through daily 12 Step meetings, lecture and video presentations and group discussions, guests at The Retreat support one another in exploring the attitudes, behaviours and skills necessary to build a solid foundation for recovery. Our guests develop an in-depth understanding of the basic principles of recovery as outlined in the “Big Book” of Alcoholics Anonymous. Rehabilitation begins with structure.
Involving the Family
Alcoholism affects the entire family, and family members require their own recovery process. The alcoholic has a significantly better chance of success when the family is involved. We invite the families of our guests to participate in the Family Group on Wednesday evenings. This group offers support from staff and other families who have suffered under alcoholism. The group is designed to be educational, focusing on boundaries that promote a healthy recovery environment when a guest leaves The Retreat. Our Family Programme has been a success beyond our expectations, with families attending long after a guest has left The Retreat.
Our mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals, families and communities affected by alcohol and drug or other substance abuse by providing supportive services grounded in 12 Step principles which are widely accessible, cost-effective and of the highest quality.
The Retreat Model was developed in 1998 by The Retreat Wayzata, USA and has shown increasingly positive outcome rates which exceed traditional treatment at a quarter of the cost. The Retreat’s 30 day residential programme relies on a simple approach that:
- Separates the guests from their drinking environment.
- Surrounds them with like-minded individuals who are passionate about finding sobriety, constantly reinforcing the idea that recovery is a ‘we’ programme.
- Introduces the guests to fellow alcoholics whose drinking problem has been solved that show our guests precisely how to stay sober.
- The Retreat is firmly grounded in the principles of 12 Step recovery. We help guests become aware of their condition, embrace honesty and take direction leading to not only abstinence but improved quality of life.
The Retreat is not affiliated with any religious organisation, our guests are treated with dignity and respect, and is the most affordable private residential care in New Zealand. If alcohol, drugs or other substances is causing you or someone you love problems, seize the moment, contact us and start to turn your life around.
